For those who don’t want to read the whole backstory, the release date of Avatar 2 has been moved back to December 16, 2022, from December 20, 2021, because of the ongoing worldwide health crisis. It would be an understatement to say that moviegoers are giddy in anticipation of the release of Avatar: The Way of Water, James Cameron’s long-awaited sequel to his box-office smash Avatar.
It’s been a long time coming, not just since the original Avatar film came out, but also since production on the sequel ramped up.

In May, a teaser trailer for The Way of Water was released online, reacquainting viewers with the world of Pandora and confirming the title. The full trailer for the film wasn’t released until November.
The release of this film will initiate a series of sequels, one every year until the release of Avatar 5 in December 2028. (assuming that the future films hit no delays or snags). But that’s not why we’re here; this discussion is about Avatar: The Way of the Water, and this is what we know so far.
Avatar 2 Cast And Main Lead
All of Avatar’s primary actors have signed contracts to return for the sequel, so Cameron can count on his original cast. In addition to Sam Worthington’s comeback as the human-turned-Na’vi Jake Sully, Na’vi princess Neytiri will be played by Zoe Saldaa.
It appears from the trailer that Stephen Lang will reprise his role as the villainous Colonel Miles Quaritch for all four films. A fan hypothesis that Quaritch will return in July 2022 was validated when Lang said of him, “He’s bigger, He’s bluer, He’s pissed off.” Uh-oh.
Sigourney Weaver will reprise her role as Neytiri and Jake’s adopted Na’vi daughter, Kiri, in the sequel. After working together on the 1997 hit Titanic, Kate Winslet returns to the James Cameron fold as Ronal in all three Avatar sequels. When it comes to the Metkayina clan, Ronal is known as a “very devoted and fearless” co-leader.
Edie Falco (The Sopranos, Nurse Jackie) will play the new character of General Ardmore, and CCH Pounder will return as Neytiri’s mother Mo’at. Matt Gerald will also return in his role as Corporal Lyle Wainfleet.
Cliff Curtis (Fear the Walking Dead) will play Tonowari, and Bailey Bass (Reya) and Duane Evans Jr. (Rotxo) will return for the sequel, which introduces a new Na’vi clan called the Metkayina.
Jamie Flatters plays Jake’s son Neteyam in the sequel, Britain Dalton plays Neytiri’s daughter Lo’ak, and Trinity Bliss plays Jake and Neytiri’s daughter Tuktirey. Miles Socorro (Jack Champion), sometimes known as Spider, is a human youngster who has been adopted by the couple.
In the sequel, Sigourney Weaver will play Kiri, Neytiri and Jake’s adoptive Na’vi daughter. Kate Winslet reprises her role as Ronal in all three Avatar sequels, continuing her partnership with James Cameron that began with the 1997 blockbuster Titanic. Ronal is revered as a “very committed and fearless” co-leader among the Metkayina tribe.
CCH Pounder will reprise her role as Neytiri’s mom Mo’at, and Edie Falco (The Sopranos, Nurse Jackie) will play the new character of General Ardmore. Corporal Lyle Wainfleet, played by Matt Gerald, will also be back.
In addition to Bailey Bass (Reya), Duane Evans Jr. (Rotxo), and Cliff Curtis (Tonowari; Fear the Walking Dead), the new Na’vi clan in the sequel is called the Metkayina.
Trintiy Bliss plays Jake and Neytiri’s daughter Tuktirey, while Jamie Flatters plays Jake’s son Neteyam and Britain Dalton plays Neytiri’s daughter Lo’ak in the sequel. Jack Champion’s character, Miles Socorro, sometimes known as Spider, is a human child that the couple has adopted.
The character of Varang, portrayed by Oona Chaplin of “Game of Thrones,” will be featured prominently in all four sequels.
Michelle Yeoh, a seasoned actor who has been in multiple Marvel films, was first spotted on location in March of 2021, in the part of Dr. Karina Mogue, a scientist. The caption hints she will appear in Avatar 3, suggesting she will play a significant role in the upcoming films.
At first, fans didn’t realise that David Thewlis, who played Snape in the Harry Potter films, would be appearing in the sequel. The truth is out, and he’ll be in Avatar 3 (and 4 and 5), but not 2. Phew!
Avatar 2 Plotline
A first official synopsis was released alongside the title, and it verified many of our suspicions.
It says, “On Pandora, Jake Sully has made a home with the family he has adopted. To save their home planet from the hands of an old foe who has returned to finish what was started, Jake must join forces with Neytiri and the Na’vi military.
Landau has stated that “the trip spanning all four movies will build a connected narrative,” so we know that even though there will be three sequels after this one, each movie will be a stand-alone story.
There’s also the fact that the RDA mining operation is coming back to Pandora, which means Jake will have to bring his family to the reef, where they’ll inevitably run across the Metkayina. Water’s significance in Avatar 2 was captured by filming the motion capture sequences there.
Deaf actor CJ Jones (Baby Driver), who has been contracted to develop a “new Na’vi sign language” for the film, has let it be known that this language will be unique to the film.
Avatar 2 Release Date
For those who don’t want to read the whole backstory, the release date of Avatar 2 has been moved back to December 16, 2022, from December 20, 2021, because of the ongoing worldwide health crisis.
In 2017, production on the sequel began, however given that it features both live-action and motion capture sequences, the delay is understandable. Cameron stated that production on Avatar 2 was “100% complete” and that production on Avatar 3 was “about 95% complete” in September of 2020.
Cameron has been hard at work on all three of our upcoming films. Due to the young actors, he admitted filming Avatar 4 in December 2021.
As he explained to Variety, “We shot all the scenes for 2 and 3 together — and a little bit of 4 — that required a certain actor. I had to shoot the kids out of there. At the halfway point of the story, on page 25 of Film 4, they are given permission to age six years. In other words, I required everything prior to that time, and everything after that may be handled “later.”
Cameron has also hinted that he may not helm Avatar 4 or 5, but promised a “corker” in the fourth film. “I actually hope I get to make it. But that is subject to market conditions. Because “Three” has already been recorded, he assured Empire that they will release it soon.
It’s all connected, so I’m crossing my fingers that we can make parts four and five.
Avatar 2 Trailer And Teaser
The teaser trailer was first shown at CinemaCon and then released in theatres alongside Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness before it was made available online in May.
Director Liam O’Donnell, who was in attendance at the Digiday event and said the picture “appears to be the most outrageously intricate movie ever made,” saw even more video. The expression “holy s***” is appropriate. The keynote speech given by James Cameron at Digital Day literally blew [my] mind.
It wasn’t until November that the movie’s official trailer dropped, giving us our first look at the sequel’s expanded plot and the possibility of a war on Pandora.
Welcome to Avatar: The Way of Water, the title of the upcoming Avatar sequel.
On December 16, return to Pandora.

Avatar 2 is now known as Avatar: The Way of Water, as was previously described.
The four sequels to Avatar will be titled Avatar: The Way of Water, Avatar: The Seed Bearer, Avatar: The Tulkun Rider, and Avatar: The Quest for Eywa, according to a report from BBC News from November 2018.
Since the first one was accurate, it’s possible that the other three will also have these titles, which Cameron later confirmed are possibilities.
Avatar 2 Reasons Of Delay
If you’re interested in learning how the sequel finally made it to theatres, here you go.
Production on Avatar 2 was scheduled to begin in April 2016, however that month came and went without any sign of activity. It was announced in January of the next year that work on the film’s motion-capture segment would begin in August of that year, but it didn’t get underway until September.
Avatar 2 was originally scheduled for a December 2017 release, however it was pushed back after the announcement of a fourth Avatar film (and the rest set for 2018 and 2019 presumably). Cameron explained the long wait time by citing the “extremely intricate” nature of the writing process.
After the release date of Star Wars: The Last Jedi was postponed from May to December of 2017, it was speculated that Avatar 2 might also be delayed until the following year.
After the Fox acquisition, Disney pushed the release date of the sequel back to December 2020, and then again to December 2021. This takes us up to the present day and the delays caused by COVID in the film industry.
Cameron handled the setbacks in 2017 with composure. Recently, however, he discussed his worries in an interview. So far, though, it appears that those worries were unwarranted. With Avatar 2 arriving 12 years later, Cameron admitted, “I was a little concerned that I had stretched the cord too far, in our fast-paced, modern society.” We had 148 million views in 24 hours after we released the teaser trailer.
The age-old question, though, is whether or not this will actually result in bums on seats.
Avatar 2 Other Sequels
There will be four Avatar sequels, the first of which is The Way of Water. It was on the same day, September 25, 2017, that filming on Avatar 3 began in New Zealand. The following actors have been confirmed to return: Worthington, Saldaa, Lang, Weaver, Pounder, Curtis, Ribisi, Moore, Rao, Gerald, and Chaplin.
Cameron said in an interview last November, “Let’s face it, if Avatar 2 and 3 don’t earn enough money, there’s not going to be a 4 and 5” despite the fact that the last two sequels have apparently been greenlit. David Thewlis, who played a key role in Avatar 3, confirmed this in February 2018: “they’re making 2 and 3, they’re going to see if people go and see them, and then they’ll make 4 and 5.” However, Weaver contradicted this in November 2018 when she said she was “busy doing Avatar 4 and 5” after the first two sequels had wrapped principal photography.
In January 2019, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that both Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 are in development but have not been formally greenlit, in light of The Walt Disney Company’s proposed acquisition of 21st Century Fox. In February of 2019, producer Landau suggested that Iger was misunderstood. Avatar 4 and 5 “are not only [greenlit],” he claimed, and production on Avatar 4 is already one-third complete.

The critically acclaimed film Avatar has spawned a sequel, titled “Avatar: The Way of Water.” After James Cameron debuted the first version of Avatar in 2009, approximately 13 years have passed.
Parents should know that the plot of James Cameron’s sci-fi epic Avatar revolves around the eventual colonisation of Pandora, the planet where the Na’vi live. The film runs for a lengthy 161 minutes and features several intense warfare and hunting sequences that are heavy on special effects and depict the destruction caused by imperialist brutality and the right of Indigenous communities to defend themselves and their territory.
Military aircraft firing missiles, arrows loaded with neurotoxic, terrifying flora and creatures native to Pandora, and tonnes of explosions are all part of these scenarios. Words like “s—t,” ” bitch,” and others are commonly used in the salty vocabulary of the battlefield. Like his earlier works, Cameron constructs a morality tale about treating others with respect that centres on a romantic connection and features strong female characters that play major roles in the plot.
The human-Na’vi relationship is exacerbated by Jake, the protagonist, who uses a wheelchair during the day and a Na’vi “avatar” body during his interactions with the local populace. There are times when even the Na’vi’s elaborate dress reveals a bit too much skin. There is sexual tension between the leads. (Note: Avatar: The Last Airbender fans should be aware that this film has no connection to either the animated series or the film adaptation of the same name.)
