The Godfather of Harlem is a great illustration of the potential of contemporary television,” Cheryl Kahla of The South African said. Bumpy, played by Whitaker, is a drug lord who, at heart, is simply a regular guy looking for a way to connect with his family.

Endlines-

This new series starring Forrest Whitaker as the real-life gangster Bumpy Johnson is witty, amusing, and ambitious, and it loosely centres on the black rebellion and criminal world of early 1960s New York.

While the political, criminal, and social milieu shown in the first season of this programme is quite grim, the show’s second season has already been given the go-ahead, so don’t worry if you can’t handle the gloom.

But in doing so, the showrunners and writers may have taken on more than they could handle, particularly if they want to keep the series grounded in reality. It’s not as accurate a picture of history as, say, the film Braveheart, but neither is it incredibly inaccurate. Whenever Bumpy Johnson, the Italian mafia, or Malcolm X are the protagonists, the borders between reality and fiction are certain to blur for dramatic effect.

As a whole, though, the programme is quite enjoyable to watch, with excellent acting from its cast and a convincing recreation of New York in the early 1960s.

But there’s one HUGE problem I want to bring out. The soundtrack is mostly comprised of contemporary hip hop (and not particularly excellent hip hop/rap music, at that), despite taking place during what is perhaps the greatest era of black soul and blues music. The choice is completely insane and a huge waste of potential. I was on the verge of turning off the television when the opening credits began playing and I realised I already knew the basic plot.

Overall, however, I’m happy I didn’t. Godfather of Harlem isn’t revolutionary, and it’s not a show you’ll rush to suggest to friends, but it’s a highly respectable, enlightening, and fascinating television programme that clearly separates itself from the current herd.
