Mosquito Coast Season 3 Plotline

Due to its cancellation, Mosquito Coast Season 3’s plot remains a mystery. Mosquito Coast’s plot is based on the final season of the show.

Season 1 reveals that Allie is planning to take his family on a boat and try to hide somewhere safe from the authorities. It turns out that Margot (Melissa George), the mother of Dina (Logan Polish) and Charlie (Gabriel Bateman), had a secret past that she had never shared with her children.

In the premiere, we find out why they had to go into hiding. What had previously been only alluded to is now explained in excruciating detail, undermining any possibility that it might have been a misdirect in keeping with Allie’s learning in the novel to manipulate the truth to his own ends. Without giving too much away, Margot used to be an environmental extremist who would do anything to prevent the end of the world as we know it.

When a character from Season 1 reappears and becomes aligned with Allie for a little side mission, it’s just one of several episodes in the middle of the season that take such a sudden Divation that they almost lose the storyline entirely. Because of this, the plot is propelled forward into even more side plots, and nothing is accomplished.

Character growth is almost nonexistent, with the exception of a few scenes where they are dumped with an emotional explanation before continuing to plod along. That’s why, no matter how hard the actors try, the dialogue will come off as hollow and artificial. We can’t help but cheer every time a character kicks off a sentence with “do you remember,” because we know a good exchange is about to ensue. Most stories do need to set the stage in some way, but this one completely lacks the subtitle that would have smoothed over any potential bumps.

The fact that this is happening for the sake of familiar plot points and character beats only serves to dampen the overall impact. There aren’t many memorable scenes once the family gets to the jungle camp where they’ll spend the majority of the season.

Unfortunately, the new family members only serve as extraneous noise to the underdeveloped main cast. When the characters aren’t actively engaged, there’s no drive to care about the frustration of new complications that introduce uncertainty for their future. Instead, we learn a great deal about the final causes of oxygen depletion.

Even though this is the kind of role that Theroux excels at playing, nothing else here comes close. You just want to rewatch The Leftovers so you can see his talents put to use in a better story. Despite having Theroux at its centre and promising source material, Season 2 of The Mosquito Coast falls victim to a simplistic formula that veers into convention and is then dressed up with unconvincing twists.
