“Two years ago, when I decided I wanted to write a book about rock ‘n’ roll, I kept coming back to that moment when Lindsey watched Stevie sing Landslide,” writes Reid in an excerpt from her article for Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine Book Club. How strikingly like two in love it appeared to be. We’ll never really know what transpired between them, though.
In order to explore how reality and performance might converge, as well as how singing about old wounds might keep them open, I wanted to compose a novel about it. I’ve done a ton of research on Fleetwood Mac and a ton of other bands and duos, but I’m continually moved by that exchange between them. I can’t help but be in awe of the fact that Stevie and Lindsey still had love for one another despite everything that had happened to them. Or how they used to, despite what it appeared to us all that they did. I’m aware that I won’t have the solution. And if I’m being honest, I think there isn’t one.
