When a major studio schedules a comedy for the summer, it typically signifies the studio feels confidence in the film, which seems to be the case with Strays and Universal. In a recent interview with Collider’s Steve Weintraub, director Josh Greenbaum discussed the film’s test screenings.
“Well, sure, our very first preview was exciting for me, the studio, and everyone watching since it tested really well, particularly for a first screening, but we also had complete clapping, hooting, and hollering at our conclusion. “Well, this is working,” I reflected. Extremely lively and motivating, and I’m sure it will continue. But it was a lot of fun, and we hadn’t done previews like this in a long time.”
Strays Deal With?
Strays is about a Border Terrier called Reggie who adores his owner Doug, despite the fact that Doug is a drunk, abusive, uncaring jerk who refuses to have anything to do with the adorable little dog. As Reggie is abandoned on the city’s streets, he joins up with a gang of feral dogs to avenge Doug by chewing off his penis.
According to the official description from Universal, “they say a dog is a man’s best friend,” but what if the guy is a terrible jerk? In such case, it could be time for some sweet payback, doggie style. Reggie (Will Ferrell), a naive, persistently optimistic Border Terrier, is abandoned on the tough city streets by his lowlife owner, Doug (Will Forte; The Last Man on Earth, Nebraska), and Reggie is adamant that his devoted owner would never desert him on purpose.
Reggie discovers he was in a poisonous relationship when he meets Bug (Oscar® winner Jamie Foxx), a fast-talking, foul-mouthed Boston Terrier who enjoys his independence and feels that owners are for fools.
Reggie, Bug, and Bug’s pals—Maggie (Isla Fisher; Now You See Me, Wedding Crashers), a smart Australian Shepherd who has been sidelined by her owner’s new puppy, and Hunter (Randall Park; Always Be My Maybe, Aquaman), an anxious Great Dane who is stressed out by his work as an emotional support animal—hatch a plan and embark on an epic adventure to help Reggie find his way home… then make Doug pay by chewing off the appendage he loves the most.

(Hint: It’s not his foot). Strays, directed by Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar) and written by Dan Perrault (Players, American Vandal), is a funny, R-rated live-action comedy about the difficulties of love, the significance of wonderful friendships, and the surprising joys of couch humping.
Strays Cast And Main Lead
Strays boasts a fantastic cast, with Will Ferrell and Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx at the top of the list. Ferrell rose to prominence in films such as Elf, Anchorman, Old School, and Step Brothers.
He was most recently seen in the musical Christmas comedy flick Spirited with Ryan Reynolds. Ferrell will not be appearing in just one major film this summer. He will also appear in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, which has an all-star ensemble. Will Ferrell will play Reggie, the lead dog in the film.
Jamie Foxx, who got his start on In Living Color, has gone on to become one of the largest and most gifted personalities in Hollywood.
He has appeared in a variety of films, including Ray, Collateral, Django Unchained, Baby Driver, the Horrible Bosses films, Dreamgirls, and as the villainous Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man: No Way Home. He will also appear in the upcoming sci-fi comedy They Cloned Tyrone. In Strays, Foxx will portray Bug, a Boston Terrier who takes Reggie under his wing.
Will Forte (The Last Man on Earth), who will portray Doug, one of the few human characters, Randall Park (WandaVision), who will play Hunter, a neurotic Great Dane who wears a cone, and Isla Fisher (Wedding Crashers), who will play Maggie, an Australian Shepard, round out the primary cast of Strays.

Strays Trailer And Teaser
On February 8, 2023, Universal Pictures published the first official trailer for Strays. Despite imitating iconic comedies such as 21 Jump Street and Ted, the very R-Rated trailer portrays a motley gang of dogs using f-bombs, drinking booze, humping garden gnomes, and ingesting mushrooms. There’s also a sock puppet involved since sock puppets can never go wrong.
Strays Directors And Producers
Strays is directed by Josh Greenbaum. Greenbaum gained to fame through directing documentaries such as The Short Game, Becoming Bond, and Too Funny to Fail: The Life and Death of the Dana Carvey Show. Afterwards, he directed his first feature picture, the cult comedy Barb & Star Go to Vista del Mar, starring Kristen Wiig, Annie Mumolo, and Jamie Dornan.
Dan Perrault, who co-created the short-lived but adored Netflix and Paramount+ mockumentary shows American Vandal and Players, authored the script and also acts as the film’s producer.
In addition to Aditya Sood (Cocaine Bear), Erik Feig (Cha Cha Real Smooth), and Louis Leterrier, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, famed for the Jump Street films, The Lego Movie, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, serve as producers on the picture (Fast X).
As previously said, and as you can probably guess from the trailer, Strays is rated R, so if you want to watch it in a theatre, you may want to leave the kids at home. The film is classified R for profanity, vulgar and sexual material, and drug usage. This may be seen on the film’s official poster as well as the trailer’s thumbnail.
