Imelda Staunton, who plays Elizabeth II in season 5, revealed that production on the new season began in September of this year (watch the above clip to hear more about this).

Peter Morgan, the show’s creator and executive producer, spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the summer to explain the timeline’s inspiration. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t significantly slowed production, unlike other shows in the entertainment industry.

The crown season 5: Release Date

While we don’t yet know when the fifth season of The Crown will premiere, we do know that it will be available on Netflix in November of 2022. Once we learn more, we will let you know.

Considering the previous three volumes each had ten episodes, it’s a safe bet that Netflix will stick with the same formula for the fifth season. Streaming services typically release entire seasons at once rather than releasing new episodes every week, giving viewers more flexibility in how quickly or slowly they consume the material.

Is there a Season Six of ‘The Crown’?

To do justice to the richness and complexity of the story, creator Peter Morgan said, “we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons” in 2020, meaning the show will return to its original run length of six seasons. The Crown has been renewed for a solitary final season.

Since then, casting calls for young actors to portray Prince William and Prince Harry have confirmed that filming will begin in late August 2022.

The crown season 5: plotline

Season 4 of The Crown covered the years 1977-1990, and Season 5 will most likely continue the story from there. We anticipate that events surrounding the United Kingdom’s 1991 decision to join the United States in the Gulf War, when the Queen gave a special address to the nation, and its aftermath will be shown in earlier episodes.

It’s likely that the “amicable” divorce of Princess Diana and Prince Charles in 1992, which Elizabeth would later refer to as her “Annus horribilis” despite being her Ruby Jubilee, will play a significant role. On the set, Elizabeth Debicki was photographed in Diana’s famous “revenge dress,” which the princess wore to a dinner at the Serpentine Gallery in Kensington Gardens in 1994.

Season 5 won’t just focus on Diana and Charles’ split. Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew and Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips both went their separate ways in the 1990s. However, since Anne and Andrew have never played significant roles on the show, it’s possible that their private lives won’t have any bearing on the outcome.

Due to Prasanna Puwanarajah’s casting as the BBC’s Martin Bashir, we can assume that the notorious November 20, 1995 broadcast of Diana’s interview on Panorama will also be included. In an interview, she said, “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.” This remark caused a minor uproar at the time. However, the tragic death of Diana in a car accident two years later is another pivotal event that viewers can expect to see explored in the fifth chapter.
